Welcome to the Beyond the Box Office Blog – keeping you updated the latest advances in online film distribution. For filmmakers & film lovers alike!
I am Malaika Mose and I work for a startup as a software product manager. Please note that the opinions in this blog are mine and may or may not be representative or in agreement with directions or official positions of my current employers. I have been in the software industry for over 13 years and have even won an national award for my work in that area. I also work as a digital strategist for ARRAY, formerly known as AFFRM, founded by award-winning filmmaker Ava Duvernay. That, I’ve been doing for about 5 years. Time flies!
That’s not what this blog is about though, in general anyway.
I am a movie lover. I have been since I saw my first Alfred Hitchcock film, since I used to watch old Vincent Price movies with my mom. I’ll watch big films and small ones. If it’s accessible and good (purely subjective I know) I’ll watch it. Key word being accessible. My frustration began when I was in college. When the only way I could experience really interesting sounding films was to read about them because they showed well at film festivals at far off places I couldn’t go to. I’d hope they’d get picked up so they would make it to a theater near me or a DVD rental store. Most times that didn’t happen though. So I was stuck, but not so much anymore… and that’s what this blog is about.
Why Beyond the Box Office?
This site is dedicated to helping filmmakers navigate this new world where film distribution and technology, the internet in particular, are colliding by sharing the information I learn as I research my book of the same name, due out in 2011. As I learn, you will too, so that I will never have to be without a movie again! I mean, so that you can have your film seen in as many places as possible.
