Effective Use Of Building Energy Simulation

The application of building simulations to evaluate how the thermal efficiency of commercial and residential buildings is increasing. This is driven by various factors, including the availability of higher-quality software. But, creating simulations requires more work, which means it will cost more.

DTS is a rules-based system on prescriptive rules and is therefore non-flexible. The majority of the time, each orientation or facade is analyzed separately, and the performance over one orientation or facade cannot be used to offset the lower performance of another component of the building fabric or the glazing.

DTS also contains many simplicities. For example, the shadowing of adjacent structures is usually overlooked even though it can have a significant effect on cooling and heating loads.

The component of DTS that creates the most angst is the glass calculator. The tool aims to evaluate the energy use caused by windows. The BCS includes a spreadsheet for this calculation where the windows' size, orientation, and other specifications are input.

However, more intricate designs, as exemplified by huge proportions of glass area to wall space, could result in extremely expensive specifications for glazing, like high-performance double glazing as well as the use of heavy toning.
